Entlebucher Sennenhund
Health Concerns
Bally
at 10 weeks, after her first bath!
Keeping
your Entlebucher puppy physically healthy involves feeding a high
quality puppy chow (we recommend Eukanuba large breed puppy), routine
baths, ear cleanings, tooth brushings, nail trimmings, and the routine
vet trips to keep vaccinations up to date.
But
with such a smart breed, it is important that you maintain their mental
well-being as well. For this you must take them to puppy school. It
will help you bond with your pup, and will help the pup recognize that
you are THE BOSS!
Even
more important is that you realize how much this breed needs almost
constant social interaction with you and your family. An Entlebucher
is so social that solitary confinement to a back yard or a run for most
of the day can cause neurotic behavioral problems. Indeed, the
worst punishment for an Entle is for you to ignore him! So be prepared
to have a tag-along new member of the family that will happily participate
in all aspects of your life! Entles are TRUE companion dogs!
As
far as specific breed-related health problems go, there are two things
that breeder dogs are routinely checked for. They must have healthy
eyes, and healthy hips. If you check under each one of my adult dogs,
you will see that we have up-to-date health information for each dog.
If you click on the listing, you can examine the specific document concerning
each dog.
All
breeder dogs must be screened for good eyes and hips, which is why we're
supposed to wait until they are two years old to breed them. But it
is valuable for pet dogs to get these tests done as well. They are not
too expensive, and the information greatly helps the Entlebucher database
as far as tracing inheritable diseases or conditions. These are what
should be certified as healthy prior to breeding an Entlebucher:
